I started 2008 off with a jolt.
Flying home from our annual Christmas visit to Florida, a scratchy throat was the warning sign that a cold was coming on. Getting off the plane revealed ankles swollen to the size of tree trunks and fingers like sausages. I couldn’t have swelled that badly from a 3 hour flight, so I paid a visit to the doctor to make sure I wasn’t having congestive heart failure. In fact, I had a virus and the swelling was just a symptom.
None of that was the jolt.
The jolt was stepping on the scale and finding myself weighing in at 181 pounds. I am a 5′3″ female, relatively small to medium boned, and spent the majority of my youth weighing in the 120-135 range, but have been gaining steadily for the past 20 years. Sure, I’ve yo-yo’d up and down a bit, but I suppose my average weight over the last decade has been about 160.
So here I was, 20 pounds over my already 30-pounds-overweight weight. Hmmm. No wonder I felt like crap and was starting to actually waddle when I walked.
I’m ashamed it took this long to sit up and take notice, but I finally said, “enough.” I proceeded to dig out my Atkins book (Dr. Atkin’s Diet Revolution) and begin reading it from scratch. A co-worker pledged to buddy with me, and we were off.
This blog will track my progress, not just to how my “diet” is going, but how I adjust to and embrace a controlled carbohydrate lifestyle along with regular exercise. I hope you will come with me on my journey, read my tips, use the resources provided in the right hand column, and find yourself motivated by the changes in my health, fitness, and appearance.
Come along! And if you are on MySpace, check out my new page there.
As of Jan 28, I am down to 170 – a loss of 11 pounds in just under three weeks.
